I've got a few questions, which was the first company to invent the flip phone... and why do you like the flip phone? What makes the flip phone famous...?

thank yaz.

Best answer:

Answer by Eddie C
Motorola. Thier first "flip" phone was just a big brick that had a flip on it. The first "clamshell" phone was also made by motorola and it was called the motorola Startac. this was the first true flip phone. (in the U.S. anyway). They arte famous because of size, they take what a normal sized phone has and cuts the size virtually in half. This was a big deal back when phones were big bricks "zach morris phone" and they took up so much space. "candy bar" style phones were going away with exception of nokia models but as they are all becoming so small, you are seeing more and more "candy bar" style phones come back (samsung upstage) as they can also be very small. Another key idea is that the buttons are covered when flip phone is closed so no accidental dialing when it's in your pocket. Hope this helps.

Introduction To Flip Phones

Today, the world is going crazy with the popularity of mobile phones, and in particular flip phones. People of all generations and ages are using them and with much ease. There seems to be nothing complicated as to how to use mobile phones as they come with so many great features. You can see the phone being used by all whatever purpose may be. Some use it for their business while some use it for playing games. Some use it for listening to their music, while some use it to click photos. Still some net freaks use their mobiles for sending SMS, MMS, EMS or Email. Now if anybody is not using the mobile then he certainly does not belong to this world. With so much of challenge all the mobile manufacturing companies are left with the question of introducing different models with latest features. The different models of mobiles are the stick/candy bar phone, clamshell/flip phone, swivel phone, slider phone and the touch screen smartphone.

Sony Ericsson Flip phone

Z520i is an exciting phone which allows you to change covers, has ringtones, images and light effects with easy to use features.
Z550i has everything for those of you who are interested in communication, entertainment, and imaging.

Z710i has the latest technology to give you the data as fast as lightning. Z610i has a hidden mirror effect which displays only when the phone is on.

Z558i has wireless PC sync, internet browser and touchscreen control which make the task easy and at the same time enjoyable for you.

The W710i and the Z320i are the latest launches from Sony Ericsson with all the similar features essential on the mobile but it also has used other features using the latest technology so that you feel one step ahead of the others.

Sony Ericsson is yet to release the much awaited Z250i. And once it is in the market you will see for yourself heads swinging when someone notices you using it.

11:45 - iOS 4 upgrades for older phones arrive June 21. Free upgrade, even for the iPod Touch.

11:40 - Pricing: $299 for 32GB, $199 for 16GB, with two-year contract. Black or white. Same as 3GS. Existing iPhone owners can upgrade up to six months early. On sale June 24. iPhone 3GS will also hang around: 8GB for $99. Accessories are also redesigned, of course.

11:34 - Will iPhone 4 finally make video calls take off? Apple calls it FaceTime (because you need a catchy name for everything at Apple). You can use either camera, portrait or landscape. The catch: Only works on Wi-Fi and only between iPhone 4s. Older phones are shut out.

11:32 - Steve Jobs' trademark "one more thing," which we haven't seen much of in recent years, is back. What is it? Of course: Videoconferencing. You'd forgotten about that new camera on the front of the phone, right?

11:22 - Developers who want to integrate ads into their applications (presumably to keep app prices down) can now do so via Apple directly. Introducing iAds. Apple is running out of things to put after the letter "i." Ad demos follow. (Feel free to use the restroom now.)

11:16 - The news you've been waiting for: iBooks for the iPhone 4. You can feel the excitement over this enormous announcement. (/sarcasm) Actually, it's an indicator of how seriously Apple is targeting books, including a dedicated iBooks store on the phone. Amazon and its Kindle are surely quaking in their boots.

11:15 - iOS 4 ships to developers today. No word on a release date to the public. Just "soon." Nearly 100 million "iOS devices" sold to date.

11:14 - More rumors come true: Bing joings Google and Yahoo! as a search provider option.

11:09 - iPhone OS gets a new name: iOS. iOS 4 adds 100 new features to the phone, including the long-awaited multitasking. (This has previously been announced by Apple.) Other new features included a unified inbox, threaded email, and folders that let you group apps together -- looks perfect for those of us with overstuffed screens.

10:58 - Video editing and sharing built in. A version of iMovie will appear on the iPhone now, complete with transitions, credits, and all that jazz. Demo looks snazzy, but who ever has the time and patience to edit videos they shoot on their phone? iMovie won't be standard; $4.99 to download.

10:56 - Camera is upgraded to 5 megapixels, with 5x digital zoom and the aforementioned "illuminated sensor" (don't call it a flash -- Apple hates Flash). Also records video in HD resolution (720p at 30 fps). Flip cameras are in trouble.

10:50 - Internal accelerometer features are also upgraded to add a gyroscope to the mix. It's a little wonky, but now the phone will sense movement on a six-axis basis. Pretty early stuff, we'll see how developers (mainly game devs) take advantage of this.

10:48 - iPhone is now powered by Apple's A4 chip. Battery is bigger, and Jobs promises 40% more talk time than before (great news). 32GB of storage standard (no upgrade vs. the 3GS). And support for 7.2Mbps networks... once AT&T supports it.

10:46 - As rumored, 960 x 640 pixels of resolution on the 3.5-inch display. That's unheard of on a cell phone and actually approaches what most smaller laptops have. 78% of the pixels that the iPad has.

10:43 - Hiccups with the demo... blame the AT&T network. (That's what I do!)

10:38 - The display is going to knock you out of your New Balances. With 326 pixels per inch, it has a better display than the human eye can even process (300 ppi, per Jobs). It's called a "retina display." Will have to have some hands on time to see exactly how much better it looks -- and the existing iPhone screen looks pretty good as it is.

10:35 - All the rumors are true. The new phone has the thinner, squared-off design we've seen in the leaked photos of the device, redesigned buttons, a front-facing camera, a flash on the rear camera, a secondary microphone for noise cancellation, and improved antennas integrated right into the design. 26% thinner than the iPhone 3GS: The thinnest smartphone ever, according to Jobs.

10:33 - Now it's time for the main event. iPhone. It's real: the iPhone 4 (the official name) is as expected, with a new case design.

10:28 - Jobs is done with app demos. More statistics: 5 billion apps downloaded so far, with $1 billion paid to app developers. iPhone has (according to Jobs) a 28 percent market share vs. 9 percent for Android. (But Blackberry still has 35 percent.)

10:24 - Guitar Hero for the iPhone? Zzzz. We already have Rock Band for the iPhone, this doesn't look that thrilling. "A new strumming mechanic" will make gameplay perfect. Not that excited.

10:20 - Zynga's Farmville comes to the iPhone. The first Facebook app that I'm aware of to make the crossover from PC to phone. Now 70 million players can plant and harvest no matter where they are. "Farm anytime, anywhere!" That was grandpa's motto, too. Arriving this month.

10:16 - Netflix, at long last, is coming to the iPhone. Reed Hastings, Netflix's CEO, is out to give the demo. Looks a lot like the iPad application, letting you stream video and manage your queue on your iPhone. Pause a move on the iPad and it picks up where you left off on the iPhone. And -- big news -- it will work over the cell phone network as well as Wi-Fi. AT&T must be cringing already.

10:12 - Jobs is already into pumping up HTML5 and trashing Flash. Why, because apps cocded with "private APIs" ... "break and crash." With 225,000 apps available, that's a problem.

10:09 - New iBooks feature will include a note-taking system that emulates Post-Its (looks very Apple-like), bookmarks, and native PDF viewing (see, Apple doesn't hate everything that Adobe does). Updates should roll out this month.

10:07 - Now 200,000 iPhone apps available. Demos of iPad apps getting underway. 5 million books downloaded for the iPad so far (in a little over two months). Jobs say publishers are in love with the iPad already.

10:03 - Various updates about the conference (which starts today), with Jobs' usual braggadocio about how big the event has become. Then on to the sales updates. The "magical" iPad of course (2 million units).

10:01 - Steve Jobs takes the stage right on time to a standing ovation.

This year (as it’s been in the last three), all eyes are on the iPhone, as a now infamous leak has all but confirmed that a new model iPhone – alternately dubbed the iPhone HD and the iPhone 4G – will be announced. Will all the leaked details come to pass as expected? And what else does Jobs have up his turtleneck sleeves for us to look out for in 2010?

I’ll be live blogging the announcements here as they emerge from Jobs’ lips. So stay tuned – the fun begins at 10 am PDT!

Did Apple, Jobs turn the page on 'Antennagate'? - Yahoo! News

Somehow, I had a feeling that Steve Jobs would come out swinging during Friday's iPhone press briefing, and swing he did — at the media, which he accused of blowing the iPhone 4's "death grip" problem (or "Antennagate," as he called it) all "out of proportion." For customers, though, Jobs said he was "deeply sorry" for any trouble, emphasized that "we love our users," and conceded that phones — including the iPhone — "aren't perfect."

OK, but did it work? Did Jobs' description of Apple's $100 million wireless testing facility, his statistic on how fewer than 2 percent of iPhone 4 users had returned their handsets, and his offer of free cases for any iPhone 4 owners who want one ... did all that do the trick? Is the "death grip" saga over? Well, that seems to depend on who you are.

Those who delight in putting Apple in its place found plenty of ammunition from today's press briefing. "Why not just admit you sold another faulty phone?" writes one angry reader in the (800-plus) comments on my initial Yahoo! News post. "Right, because that's just what I want to do, purchase 'the world's thinnest smartphone' and then slap a case on it," writes another. "It's just MASKING the problem," complains a third.

Then you've got Apple fans and satisfied iPhone owners, who are wondering why the whole death-grip drama got so out of hand in the first place. "I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal over a minor problem," wrote a user. "I've had the iPhone 4 for two weeks now and I've never had ANY antenna problems or dropped calls," wrote another happy customer. "Who really has this problem? I know hundreds of people with iPhone 4s and they are great, never once had a dropped call."

Motorola back on top - Yahoo! News

Remember when the Motorola RAZR was all the rage? With its simple, ultra-slim flip phone, Motorola was the “It” company in the cell phone business, imitated by everyone but unstoppable in the marketplace.

Motorola ultimately sold more than 110 million of the phones in the four years after it was released, making it one of the best-selling phones of all time.

But by the time the RAZR went off the market in 2007, the mobile industry had left Motorola far behind, with the iPhone arriving just in time to quash the company’s aspirations. No one has thought much of Motorola since, and the company fell on such hard times that the company announced earlier this year it would have to split itself into two pieces in order to stay competitive.

But now, things are turning around for Motorola, all thanks to another cell phone: The Droid.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Moto pushed 2.7 million phones last quarter, up from 2.3 million in the first quarter, and the future outlook continues to look rosy. Those aren’t RAZR numbers, but they’re above expectations, and Motorola’s Droid successor, the Droid X, has been so strong that stock has run out more than once. Profits are up, and revenue is at least “stabilizing” from its long-running decline.

The only one not to notice Motorola’s surging fortunes seems to be Wall Street. The stock is still trading around where it was in 1992, though at $7.49 a share, it’s way up from its 2009 low, when the stock flirted with $3.

With Android continuing to surge as a strong competitor to the iPhone, and no other credible competition on the market, the game once again is Motorola’s to lose. Now it just needs to learn the lesson that nearly killed the company during the RAZR era: Resting on one’s laurels is deadly in this fast-moving business, and the only way to stay relevant — and to keep the company coffers filled — is to innovate, innovate, innovate.

Oh, and don’t release a cell phone that drops calls if you touch it in the wrong place.

The iPhone 4's widely reported "death grip" problems are real, Consumer Reports claims — so real, in fact, that the nonprofit group has decided not to recommend the latest iPhone. For those who've already snapped up an iPhone 4, Consumer Reports has a somewhat unorthodox suggestion: duct tape.

On the official Consumer Reports blog, analyst Mike Gikas writes that he tested three iPhone 4 handsets in the "controlled environment" of a radio frequency isolation chamber, which is "impervious" to outside radio interference.

The researchers found that if you touch the iPhone 4 in a specific spot on the lower-left edge of the handset (an "easy thing, especially for lefties"), the cellular signal "can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether," especially if you're in a "weak signal" area," Gikas writes.

That's pretty much in line with the findings of other wireless experts and customers (myself included) who've experienced the "death grip" problem on the iPhone 4, which differs from older iPhone models in that its antenna is built into a stainless-steel band that rings the outer edge of the handset.

The main culprit appears to be a gap in the band separating the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS segment of the antenna from the section for cellular GSM and 3G reception. Experts believe that if you touch the gap and "bridge" the two antenna segments, you may lose reception and even drop calls.

Apple acknowledged the new iPhone's reception problems in a letter a little over a week ago that blamed the issue on the handset's reception display, which Apple claims was showing too many bars in areas with a weak AT&T signal. Apple says an upcoming software update will include a new "formula" for determining how many bars of signal strength should be displayed at any given time.

Consumer Reports' Gikas, however, says that his new findings "call into question" Apple's excuse that "an optical illusion caused by faulty software" lies at the root of the iPhone 4's reception problems.

That said, Gikas notes that there is an "affordable" fix for iPhone 4 owners other than Apple's $30 Bumper cases: duct tape, or "another thick, nonconductive material." "It may not be pretty," Gikas says (now there's an understatement), "but it works."

Consumer Reports is withholding a recommendation for the iPhone despite the fact that it earned high scores in other smartphone categories thanks to its "improved" battery life, built-in gyroscope for precise motion detection, and the "sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone."

Of course, the iPhone 4 still could get a coveted "recommended" rating from Consumer Reports, Gikas adds, as soon as Apple devises "a permanent — and free" solution to the iPhone's "death grip" problem, presumably one that doesn't involve a length of Apple-branded electrical tape.

Consumer Reports: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4
