With my lg chocolate (slide, not flip though) i simply slide it up and press the arrow button facing <-- and a little menu comes up and i select Silent mode. Dont know if its the same for you... try it

First make sure that the phone is capable to receive email it may not be seeing as how it is not a camera phone it might not be able to receive picture messages so find that out and it should be the phone number period.
