Luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue today started selling the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness, a fashion phone with a unique see-through screen, for $990.

Sony Ericsson, the world's fifth-largest handset maker, said it designed the Pureness as a work of art rather than technology -- drawing inspiration from the purity of water and a sense of calmness.

It has a 1.8-inch monochrome display that seems to "disappear" when not in use.

In addition, the handset comes with "Pureness Concierge" -- a 24-hour a day worldwide service that helps users book restaurants, events, or any needs with a call or email.

Luxury brand Vertu pioneered the concept of handset concierge service, offering global service with every phone it sells.

The Pureness also features an MP3 player with FM radio, Bluetooth wireless technology and HSDPA high-speed Internet.

Money-losing Sony Ericsson has been looking to renew its portfolio of devices since the appeal of its Cybershot camera phones and Walkman music phones have faded.

Saks Fifth Avenue is selling the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness online and in stores for $990.
